Born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1940, studied fine art under the well-known Pakistani artist, A.B. Nazir of Karachi. While in Pakistan, till 1965, participated in several group shows, using oils as main medium.

Since arrival in Canada, from 1965, some landscape scenes are depicted somewhat in the impressionist style, with many of them painted from real life scenes in and around the Ottawa Valley and Gatineau Hills.

A member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Designers, he has considerable expertise in graphic arts and has won several prizes and awards for his design and graphics of publications.

Artistic talent and natural interest is inborn and hereditary. Father, M. Abdul Ghani, was the Royal Painter of the Raja of Dharbhanga, north eastern India. In the court of the Raja he was required to paint portraits of the Raja's family and courtiers, murals, and other art for the palace walls. he then went to Lahore as Art Director for movie studios, working on movie sets, and providing art direction.

... I am enjoying your website and the incredible images.  I have a 4 year old boy named Bennett.  It was he who led me to your painting.  Now I look at the "Boy In Red" and I see my "Boy" who I miss tonight!

> In any event, congratulations!  You are an incredible talent and I am in awe of what you can do.  It is quite amazing that your painting was there in the corner of the Nepean Sportsplex discovered by my son on the way out of swimming class!  You should be in the finest Galleries of this fine city of London, England.

Past Exhibits and Newspaper Items Profiling Ottawa Artists

Ahmad Humayun has held Group and Solo Shows through Rothwell Gallery, Ottawa, from 1979 through 1991.

He has been exhibiting at the Foyer Gallery, Ottawa, as a member artist since 2002 to date.

He was also selected as one of the Ottawa artists to exhibit at the 2005 Mayor’s Art Festival, Ottawa City Hall, from 14 to 16 October 2005.

Ahmad has exhibited and donated an oil painting titled Gloucester Cottage to the Canadian Red Cross’s Fundraiser Twelfth Annual Dinner and Auction, Fredericton, NB, 1 March 2002. In 2005 and 2006 he has also donated several large oil Calligraphy pieces to local charity groups as fundraisers, and some large oil florals to the Ottawa Hospital as a donation for the Heart Institute.

Some of the Newspaper items Profiling Ahmad Humayun:

·           1976, January 20: The Ottawa Journal, Living Section, mentioning and showing a large oil painting “echoing the blue tones of the living room of Harvey W. Adams is a delightful floral picture painted especially for the room by Ahmad Humayun, a designer with the Department of Health and Welfare.”

·           2004, April 2: Nepean This Week, Ben Franklin Place Sheds Foyer’s First Light. Themes Exhibition Brings Together High Calibre Artists. “Ahmad Humayun is represented by a large oil painting called Fishing, Ottawa River. His skilled use of light, shadow and colour makes this work an exceptional achievement. He is also showing a smaller oil painting called Storm Clouds, Gatineau.

·           2004, April 3: The Ottawa Citizen, Going Out, Galleries, mentioning and showing “The Foyer Gallery … hosts a group show title Crossroads. The above painting is by Humayun.” The painting the Citizen has printed is a large oil painting portrait titled 40 Years.

·           2004, May 28: Nepean This Week, Foyer Gallery Experiences Regeneration This Spring. Work described is “… once again shows his superior craftsmanship and colour control in the oil painting Hibiscus. Of particular interest are his choice of colours and their values of dark and light, placed either side of the transparent vase. Every colour is just right for its neighbour.”

·           2004, December 17: Nepean This Week, Warm Up in the Foyer Gallery. Work shown and described is “… an oil painting entitled Peaceful Morning. This painting has many features that hold the viewer’s attention. One is the rectangle of illuminated sky in the upper left corner that repeats in the canvas and serves as a unifying element. Another is the carefully controlled colour scheme. This contributes to the sense of unity throughout the painting. Also, the trees in the foreground almost suggest figures in some act of penance advancing toward the small village in the valley.”

·           2005, July 1: Nepean This Week, Foyer Gallery Gives Artists a Sporting Chance. Work mentioned is “… a landscape in oil called In the Wilderness. This is a perfectly balanced and understated painting that shows the hand of an artist who thoroughly knows his craft. This painting must be seen to be appreciated.”

·           2005, November 18: Nepean This Week, Foyer Gallery conjures Vivid Memories. Work shown and described is “… a large oil painting by Ahmad Humayun entitled Summer Fun. Humayun is presenting 20 per cent of the sale price to CHEO and the Heart Institute.

·           2006, January 20: Nepean This Week, Sparks Fly at the Foyer Gallery. Work shown and described is “… painting Daybreak is a very knowing arrangement of forms and light. It depicts boats along a wharf with buildings in the distance, obscured by a light blanket of fog. In the very centre, the stern of a fishing boat is being lit by a shaft of sunlight which draws one’s eye wonderfully. That attraction is then dissipated by orange boats in partial sunlight.”

·           2007, July 27: Nepean This Week, Foyer Gallery Installs New Dreamscape Exhibit. Work shown and described is “… Storm Clouds by Ahmad is an oil painting that demonstrates a strong pictorial sense and also a great command of the medium. The patterns of hills, trees and clouds are all mutually supportive in their shapes. The colours are disbursed throughout the surface, further unifying the whole. The placement of the light in the lower sky and the orange trees in the very centre draw one powerfully into the implied landscape."

In and Around Ottawa Theme - 2006

Theme: In and Around Ottawa

Depicting the Beauty of Nature’s Light, Shadow, and Colour

through Nature Scenes, Outdoor Activity, Floral Compositions,

Portraits of People in my Life, and Calligraphic Designs

Prepared for a Prospective Group Art Show at the City of Ottawa Art Gallery:

An Ottawa Artist, Ahmad Humayun’s first love is painting portraits. But he has followed several ‘loves’ producing landscapes, outdoor activity scenes, floral arrangements, and calligraphic designs - exploring and depicting the meaning of nature through different light conditions, using mostly oil as a medium for his art expression in these categories.

The attached 10 paintings are a sample of his recent work, mostly of scenes and activities around Ottawa and Gatineau. The portrait sample shows a friend at two periods in his life – as a young man and then 40 years later. The floral arrangement captures the ‘aliveness’ of a flowering plant in his home. The youth and vibrancy in the painting of two young girls involved in a summer fun activity has captured the hearts of all who see it.

Through these sample paintings he has attempted to bring out nature’s beauty as he sees it.

Art Review by Linda Privitera on 'Peace and Serenity' Solo Show

Art Review
Ahmad Humayun, 'Peace and Serenity;

The theme for Ahmad Humayun's focus show at the Foyer Gallery in the Nepean
Sportsplex is "Peace and Serenity," an apt title for this collection of
beautiful, light filled oil paintings. Ahmad's use of gold and yellow tones
in particular make the viewer feel as if one could live and rest with these
works over a long time. The paintings are rich and warm and well balanced.

Humayun's childhood was marked by violence experienced as a young child
during the partition of British India. Emigrating to Canada in his early
twenties he brought with him remarkable art skills and the legacy of his
father who had been the official painter of the Maharaja of Darbhanga in
Northeastern part of the Subcontinent. So it is all the more precious that
his art is full of beauty and delight in the flowers and landscapes of this
country.

Children's gazes are full of life at play; couples take to the Rideau River
waterways; cut glass vases are full of vibrant blooms. One landscape near
Hawkesbury reveals trees that look like people coming over the hills and
heading for the water and the valley. Each landscape invites the viewer to
linger over the details. His portraits are also inviting.

A large painting in Arabic illuminates the Sufi path of whirling dervish in
elongating the letters so that the viewer feels the movement to the center
of prayer, "the truth is God." A loving tribute to his parents, his father a
young man when he died, and his mother who lived much longer is a powerful
piece as is the young and aging portrait of an old friend. Here we see the
history of the artist's life journey over time.

We also catch a feeling of the 'Group of Seven' in his early landscapes
through the choice of color and line but I suspect it is in the bold use of
vibrant color that is more peaceful and serene for now. The show opens on
September 5th and runs until the 16th. Please check the foyergallery.ca
website for hours when the gallery is open. Mr. Humayun will be at the
gallery Sunday September 16th for the whole day.
